Bartosovsky Family History

Page last modified 5 years ago

Two sons of Charles Bartosovsky, Sr., Frank and Charles, and their families emigrated from Podoli, Tisnov, Brno, Moravia (now in the Czech Republic). In October of 1878, Frank Joseph and Frances Mary (Raney) Bartosovsky accompanied by their 5 children left from Prague for freedom, a new life, the promise of land and fulfillment of dreams. They first settled in Crete/Odell, Nebraska area where five more children were born. The oldest daughter, Frances died and was buried in Crete, Nebraska.

Six years later in 1884, a younger brother, Charles H. and his wife, Anna (Svodoba), and one daughter joined the Bartosovsky family but soon moved to Rawlins County. Charles and Anna’s second child, Mary, was born in Odell on October 24, 1884. Charles filed the Certificate of Declaration of Intention to Become a Citizen in Decatur County Court House on the 10th of October 1884. Therefore, the family probably moved from Nebraska after the birth of Mary with Charles coming earlier. Charles then filed a homestead claim on a quarter of land (SW 22 1 34). This land was about a mile west of the former Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and the present cemetery. In about 1888 Charles’ brother, Frank, moved to Rawlins County and also filed a homestead claim on a quarter south of Charles (NW 27 1 34) and directly across the road.

In 1892 Frank and family moved to the Okarche, Oklahoma area and in about 1901 moved in the Apache, Oklahoma area to farm. The sons, Frank and Joseph, apparently remained in Kansas to prove the claim. In 1910 records show the land was owed by a daughter, Mollie (Bartosovsky) Cech, wife of John Cech.

Charles’ first wife, Anna, died due to childbirth along with a new born son in January 1887. Charles then married Mary Sofie Ruzicka in October of 1889. Thirteen children were born from this union and information from United States Census show that six died in infancy and one dying as a young child

As well as farming Charles also operated a mill for a number of years near Ludell. The family moved to Missouri in about 1903 where they remained for about a year. Returning to Rawlins they purchased land northwest of the former claim (SW 8 1 34). Charles and Mary lived on the farm until 1922 when they moved to Atwood. Their son, Frank, continued to farm the land.
