== Carlton Line ==

The Carlton branch traces back to [wiki:Carlton/EzraCarlton1765 Ezra Carlton] (1765-??) in Weld County Maine. He served in the American Revolution, fighting the Indians on the Mohawk River in NY. There are family stories that he might've been too young for service, so he initially served as a drummer. His wife was Susanna Whitney (1777-??), whose lineage can be traced back into England. Their 2nd (of 9) child Ezra Carlton Jr (1800-1848) married Mary Howland (1806- after 1860). Her ancestors were early settlers in Massachusetts and Maine. Ezra Jr. & Mary had 10 children, most of which migrated to Dekalb County Illinois in 1855 (the mother remained behind). Ezra & Mary's 5th and 6th children were a twin boy & girl, who were named after their parents. The twin girl Mary was one of the children that remained in Maine. The other twin was Ezra Dexter Carlton (1835-1908). He married Adelia Washburn (1840-1891) in Dekalb County IL in 1857. The Washburn line can only be traced to Genesee County NY in 1820, then they moved to Dekalb County IL in the mid 1840s, and to Bourbon County KS in the 1860s. Ezra & Adelia moved to Iowa in 1864 after his Civil War disability discharge, then they moved to Crawford Co KS by 1869, then in Bourbon Co KS by 1880.
