Joseph and Frances Vrbas and an infant son, came to the United States in 1882 from Moravia to better their life by farming. They first settled in Weston, Nebraska and in 1885 they moved to homestead land in Burntwood Township, Rawlins County. Joseph and Frances had five children who married and remained in the county. One daughter, Frances, married Anton Horinek and settled in the Newkirk, Kay County, Oklahoma area along with the Vap and Bartosovsky families.

Joseph's in-laws, Karel and Josephine Raskovice Sis, also immigrated to Rawlins County. The families were neighbors in northern Rawlins County. A sister of Joseph, Mary and her husband, Frank Faimon, joined the families but settled in the Ludell area.
