== Memorial in Rockford IL ==

"Not long ago, Belvidere had two hospitals — Highland and St. Joseph.

While the SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere is housed in the old Highland Hospital building, St. Joseph’s on the city’s far-east side remains empty.

When it closed its doors for good in 1999, two nuns — Sister Joseph Ann and Sister Mary Luke — were the last to leave.

Even though its doors remain locked, the memories of the many people who worked there are alive, and those names often come up with the former nurses who meet regularly.

And it was with sadness that they learned of the passing of Sister Joseph Ann Vap, CSJ. She died Feb. 26 at the Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, Kan.

Sister Joseph Ann, who was 78, was a nurse for 44 years and spent 37 of those at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Belvidere.

“She was wonderful,” said Julie Loos of Belvidere, who worked as a nurse with Sister Joseph Ann. “Everybody loved her to death. She worked the medical floor most of the time. She was there for everybody. She was a delightful person.”

“She always gave the patients her best,” said Mary Peterson of Belvidere, another former nursing co-worker. “She was an inspiration to all of us.”

Betty Kroll of Rockford also worked with Sister Joseph Ann as a nurse and said, “I never heard her say an unkind word about anybody. She was always every concerned about her patients. She wanted to make sure they got the care they needed.”

Kroll added that Sister Joseph Ann worked a lot in pediatrics who especially treasured the
babies, and she also was in charge of the hospital’s garden.

Sister Joseph Ann was born Winifred Sylvia Henrietta Vap in Atwood, Kan., one of nine children. According to her obituary, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia in 1951 and took her final vows in 1955, when she was given the name Sister Joseph Ann. She studied nursing at Marymount College of Nursing in Salina, Kan., and became a registered nurse in 1955.

After serving at two Sisters of St. Joseph hospitals in Kansas, she came to Belvidere.

A memorial Mass and celebration of her life was March 17 at St. James Catholic Church in Belvidere. Kroll, who worked with Sister Joseph Ann for 10 years, was instrumental in organizing the memorial.

“It was important because she was with us for 37 years,” Kroll said. “We thought there ought to be something done to respect her.

“She kept in touch with many of us when she left the area for Kansas. She even learned how to e-mail. She was one of the nurses we always kept in touch with. When someone was sick or had surgery, we knew that Sister Joseph Ann was praying for us. I know she’s up there praying for us now.”

Kroll recalled a story about the hospital’s closing. After Sister Joseph Ann and Sister Mary Luke locked the hospital’s door for the last time, which had to be a sad occasion, they climbed into a limousine for a ride to the Community Building for a final gathering.

“The limousine was one of those with a hole in the roof,” Kroll said. “And there was Sister Joseph Ann, standing up through the hole, waving to all of the people who had come to bid them goodbye.”"
