Helen McLaughlin
Edgar resident, 92 Helen M. (Vap) McLaughlin, 92, of Edgar died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Helen was born Dec. 16, 1909, near Deweese, Neb., one of seven children born to Joseph and Mary (Zlatkovsky) Vap. She attended schools in Deweese and Fairfield, graduating from the Fairfield High School in 1926. She was married to Paul Dewayne McLaughlin in 1927 in North Platte. To this union, ten children were born. They made their home on a farm near Edgar. They moved into the community in the early 1950s.
Helen worked as a cook for the Edgar Public School lunch program and the Sandy Creek School system. She later cooked for the nursing home in Edgar. Her husband died on Sept. 2, 1989. She was a member of the Church of the Plains and the Ladies Circle at the church. She became a resident of the Sutton Community Home in Sutton in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant son; son, Dean; grandson, Troy McLaughlin; great-grandson, David Bohling; three brothers, Al, Ted and Ray; and two sisters, Chris and Delores.
She is survived by six daughters, Shirley Harms of Hastings, Janice Buckles of Delphos, Kan., Gayle (Leonard) Lamp of Lahoma, Okla., Sharon (William) Kenley of Edgar, Sallie (Bill) Scheve of York, Linda (Don) Bruns of Sutton; three sons, Craig McLaughlin, Bill (Ruth) McLaughlin, both of Edgar, Clark McLaughlin of Greenwood, Ark.; brother, George Vap of Hastings; 25 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m., at the Church of the Plains in Edgar, with the Rev. Jay Snell officiating. Burial will be at the Edgar Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center today (Thursday) as well as Friday at the Church of the Plains in Edgar from 9 a.m. until services. Memorials may be given to the church.
